Michele Bachmann to Media: I’m No Sarah Palin 2.0

You’d probably expect Rep. Michele Bachmann -- three-term member of Congress, founder of the House Tea Party Caucus, parent to 23 foster children, and one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World -- to be judged on her own merits. But whenever you find Bachmann’s name in the headlines these days, it seems Sarah Palin’s name isn’t far behind.

And some observers are starting to suspect it’s no accident.

“A Tea Party Favorite Stirs Iowa. No, Her Name Isn’t Palin,” touts one New York Times headline. “GOP Has a Lightning Rod, and Her Name Is Not Palin,” declares another. A lead story on Politico on Friday was titled, “Palin, Bachmann Size Each Other Up.”

Of course, headline writing these days is designed to pack popular search terms into one line. But if Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican, announces next month as expected that she’s running for the GOP 2012 presidential nomination, she’ll have to find a way to put the Palin comparisons behind her.

At times, it’s almost as if Bachmann is viewed by the media as an updated version of Sen. John McCain’s 2008 running mate -- a Palin 2.0. On Thursday, Bachmann had to remind reporters that no two competitors “are interchangeable.”

Illegal Immigrant Arrested in Death of Texas Police Officer

A motorist accused of killing a Houston police officer while driving drunk is in the country illegally, MyFoxHouston.com reports.
Police say Johoan Rodriguez was drunk when he drove his car into a road block Sunday morning, striking and killing Officer Kevin Will with the Houston Police Department.
Rodriguez has since been charged with intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer, felony evading, and possession of a controlled substance. Police say he had .3 grams of cocaine in his pocket along with an alcohol level of .238, according to the station.
At a probable cause court hearing late Sunday night, it was learned that Rodriguez is in the country illegally. A judge refused to give the suspect any kind of bond, and his first court date was set for Wednesday.
Officer Will died a hero. The 38-year old officer couldn't get out of the path of an alleged drunk driver, but the officer did save a citizen's life.
“He credits officer Will with giving him the prior warning of yelling 'get out of the way,’” HPD Chief Charles McClelland told the media Sunday afternoon. “It actually saved his life.”

Supreme Court Sides With Arizona on E-Verify

VICTORY! The case of U.S. Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting, et al. (09-115)
In a 5-3 decision, the United States Supreme Court upheld an Arizona law called the Legal Arizona Workers Act which makes it illegal for employers in the state to intentionally hire an illegal alien, and it gives county attorneys authority to enforce this restriction, with escalating penalties for employer violations.
Frustrated at Congress’s inability — or unwillingness to close the borders and crack down on employers who prefer to hire illegal aliens over American workers, state and local governments began adopting their own policies to deal with the 30 million non-citizens who have entered the country illegally.
Nowhere has that effort been more energetic than in Arizona, which shares a 389-mile-long border with Mexico.   The State of Arizona decided that, in the vacuum created by the federal government, it would take matters into its own hands, regarding arrest and detention of illegal aliens, employment verification requirements and other policies it deemed necessary to protect the citizens of that state.
Their actions were immediately challenged by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a who’s who of leftist and pro-immigration organizations and people including the National Immigrant Justice Center, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Immigration Council the Asian American Justice Center, the Anti-Defamation League, the Asian American Institute, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Asian Law Caucus, Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California, Latinojustice PRLDEF, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the League of United Latin American Citizens, Legal Aid Society – Employment Law Center, Los Abogados Hispanic Bar Association, National Council of La Raza, National Day Laborer Organizing Network, National Employment Law Project, Southern Poverty Law Center, the Service Employees International Union, Romano L. Mazzoli, Senator Arlen Specter, and Representative Howard L. Berman. (we included this list in its entirety so you can recognize who stands against the American worker and supports open borders, mass immigration, cheap immigrant labor and amnesty).

High Court Upholds Arizona Law Penalizing Employers Over Illegal Immigrant Workers

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court has sustained Arizona's law that penalizes businesses for hiring workers who are in the United States illegally, rejecting arguments that states have no role in immigration matters.
By a 5-3 vote, the court said Thursday that federal immigration law gives states the authority to impose sanctions on employers who hire unauthorized workers.
The decision upholding the validity of the 2007 law comes as the state is appealing a ruling that blocked key components of a second, more controversial Arizona immigration enforcement law. Thursday's decision applies only to business licenses and does not signal how the high court might rule if the other law comes before it.

It's All Your Money: Foreign Aid to Muslim/Arab nations

While America's standing in the Middle East couldn't get much lower, you wouldn't know it looking at the U.S. foreign aid budget. Of proposed U.S. assistance for 2012, almost two-thirds is earmarked for Muslim nations and one-third goes to Arab countries.
Yet, despite those billions in aid, opinion polls show most Arab citizens still have an unfavorable view of America and most Muslim nations routinely vote against U.S. interests in the United Nations.
"If we are giving money to countries consistently voting against our interest, we ought to cut them off," says Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "But Congress is going to need to get some backbone here because it consistently gives Presidents the ability to waive the cutoff of that money."
Years ago, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton proposed cutting off all aid to the 30 nations who consistently voted against the U.S. in the UN. Before him, President Reagan's U.N. Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick proposed cutting off $1 million in aid for each vote an aid recipient cast against the U.S. in the U.N. In both cases, Bolton says the State Department overruled them.
"Foreign aid to a lot of countries could be readily cut and I think it's been a mistake by the U.S. government for decades not to take U.N. voting into account," Bolton said Monday.
This document, released by the State Department, examines 13 critical votes in the UN in 2010.
Compare that to this list of US aid recipients for 2012 and this poll released last week by the Pew Research Center Global Attitudes Project.
The result: some of the largest recipients of U.S. taxpayer money over the last 6 budget years consistently vote against the U.S. and harbor negative or unfavorable views of America.

Tax Delinquents Collected Billions From Obama's Economic Stimulus Plan

WASHINGTON -- Thousands of companies that cashed in on President Obama's economic stimulus package owed the government millions in unpaid taxes, congressional investigators have found.
The Government Accountability Office, in a report being released Tuesday, said at least 3,700 government contractors and nonprofit organizations that received more than $24 billion from the stimulus effort owed $757 million in back taxes as of Sept. 30, 2009, the end of the budget year.

Netanyahu at White House After Obama's Mideast Speech

After finding each other sharply at odds over terms for Mideast peace, President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set for a highly anticipated meeting Friday in the Oval Office.
Obama, in a sweeping address tackling the uprisings in the Middle East and the stalled peace process, stunned Washington and Jerusalem Thursday by endorsing Palestinians' demand for their own state based on the pre-1967 borders. The break with longstanding U.S. policy appeared to immediately aggravate the Israelis, who want the borders of any future Palestinian state determined through negotiations.
In a statement released late Thursday, Netanyahu said such a withdrawal would jeopardize Israel's security and leave major West Bank settlements outside Israeli borders.
Bailey Comment: If this doesn't show you now that Obama needs to be voted out of office nothing will!

Pelosi Caught With Hand in Obamacare Waiver Cookie Jar

Of the 204 new Obamacare waivers President Barack Obama’s administration approved in April, 38 are for fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district.
That’s in addition to the 27 new waivers for health care or drug companies and the 31 new union waivers Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services approved.
Pelosi’s district secured almost 20 percent of the latest issuance of waivers nationwide, and the companies that won them didn’t have much in common with companies throughout the rest of the country that have received Obamacare waivers.http://nation.foxnews.com/nancy-pelosi/2011/05/17/pelosi-caught-hand-obamacare-waiver-cookie-jar?cmpid=NL_FiredUpFoxNation_20110518

Even the White House Can't Tell Us Why We're Still Showering Pakistan With Aid

After harboring Usama bin Laden for nearly a decade, Pakistan has agreed in a “joint statement” with Massachusetts Senator John Kerry to work together in any future actions against “high value targets” in Pakistan. This assertion will be soothing only to those in the Obama White House and Washington foreign policy establishment unwilling to recognize that U.S. policy toward Pakistan has failed.
After all, both governments have repeatedly and habitually asserted a partnership in good order, all evidence to the contrary.
In decade since the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. has showered Pakistan with increasing quantities of aid that was supposed to achieve an alternating list of outcomes. This included encouraging Pakistani cooperation in neutralizing Al Qaeda and Taliban elements within their own territory.
On the U.S. side, in December of 2004, George W. Bush said that the Pakistani president “has been a determined leader to bring to justice not only people like Usama Bin Laden, but to bring to justice those who would inflict harm and pain on his own people.”
In 2006, Pakistan’s president said of the U.S. that “We cooperate on the intelligence. We have great understanding on the intelligence and what action [is] to be taken. That is our understanding, and I think we have succeeded in many areas.”

Pelosi's District Eat Up Health Care Law Waivers

Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district was the hands-down winner in the latest set of health care law waivers announced by the Obama administration.
More than three dozen businesses with locations in Pelosi's district were granted temporary exemptions from the law in April, according to information released by the Department of Health and Human Services. The businesses -- mostly restaurants and cafes, with a few upscale hotels and clubs mixed in -- accounted for about 20 percent of all waivers granted last month.

White House Budget Staffers Seek to Join Union

WASHINGTON -- Staffers at the White House budget office filed a petition Monday to join a labor union, seeking to gain more input over their working conditions.
About half of the career work force at the Office of Management and Budget signed the petition, said Peter Winch, deputy director of field services and education for the American Federation of Government Workers.
Winch said the move is not a signal that workers are unhappy at the agency, but a sign that they would like more of a voice in how the office is organized and more appreciation for the work they do.
"A lot of people are expected to come in on weekends and work late," Winch said. "They don't mind that culture, because they feel they are engaged in very important work, but they would like more recognition for the fact that they do make those sacrifices."

Treasury Tapping Federal Retirement Accounts to Stave Off Default

Uncle Sam is about to start borrowing from his nieces and nephews to stave off the immediate threat of default.
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner has informed members of Congress that, with the U.S. government reaching its $14.3 trillion debt ceiling Monday, his department will have to turn to a string of last-resort measures so that the government can keep paying its bills. At the top of the list is a plan to suspend investments to two government employee retirement funds, while borrowing from one of them. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is pictured at a briefing at the Treasury Department in Washington May 13.
They just can't help themselves!

Obama's Hypocritical Rhetoric on Immigration Reform

Barack Obama's immigration speech in El Paso May 10 was an exercise in electioneering and hypocrisy. Hypocrisy because while Obama complained about "politicians" blocking comprehensive immigration bills, he was one of them himself.
In 2007, when such a bill was backed by a lame duck Republican president and had bipartisan backing from Senate heavyweights Edward Kennedy and Jon Kyl, Sen. Obama voted for union-backed amendments that Kennedy and Kyl opposed as bill-killers.
In 2009 and 2010, President Obama acquiesced in Speaker Nancy Pelosi's decision to pass cap-and-trade and bypass immigration and in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's decision not to bring an immigration bill to the floor.
Both times the votes were probably there to pass a bill. Obama did not lift a finger to help.
But that did not stop the president who is constantly calling for civility to heap scorn on those who seek stronger enforcement. http://townhall.com/columnists/michaelbarone/2011/05/16/obamas_hypocritical_rhetoric_on_immigration_reform

Who To Vote For?

Who do we vote for this coming 2012? We gave the Republicans another chance to get things right and all they do is a repeat of the same old crap we voted them out for last time. And as for the Democrats, since day one they never have got it right. But one thing all these politicians do have in common besides screwing up our country and that's spending the hell out of yours and my money! They really show promise at that job!

Obama Saves/Creates Us!

John Ransom

During Obama’s campaign infomercial that CBS News produced on Wednesday regarding the economy and jobs, he showed again why he is unfitted for the job of president.
In an exchange with a Karen Gallo, a federal employee with the National Zoo who is being laid off because the rest of us can’t afford to keep paying more and more for a zoo every year, CBS News served a huge floating fastball for the president to hit out of the park.
Our country is in trouble, read the sub-text, and only Obama can save it!
Putting aside the fact that no self-respecting person with real confidence would promote themselves in this way, I wonder what Obama thought he was suppose to be doing in his first three years as president?
Now all of a sudden he wants to be relevant again?
After Gallo complained that she’ll be out of work soon, and explained that she is pregnant and building a house, Obama took his cut:  http://finance.townhall.com/columnists/johnransom/2011/05/13/obama_savescreates_us!

Judges Hearing Arguments on Obama Law Appointed by Democrats

All three judges that will hear Tuesday's arguments on the constitutionality of President Obama's health care law were appointed by Democratic presidents, including two by Obama himself.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit made the announcement shortly before the trial started, even though the case has been scheduled for months. Judges Diana Motz, the senior member of the panel, was appointed to the bench by President Bill Clinton in 1994. Andre Davis and James Wynn were appointed by Obama.

Arizona Appeals to Supreme Court on Immigration Law

PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced Monday she will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that put the most controversial parts of the state's immigration enforcement law on hold. The law was passed in April 2010 amid years of complaints that the federal government hasn't done enough to lessen the state's role as the nation's busiest illegal entry point. Its passage inspired protests and led to lawsuits seeking to overturn the law and a debate about whether the law would lead to racial profiling.

Ariz. Sheriff: Feds Order Release of Illegals

The U.S. Border Patrol has told its agents to stop arresting illegal aliens crossing the border from Mexico to keep the illegal immigration numbers down, Arizona Sheriff Larry Dever tells Newsmax.

He also charges that Attorney General Eric Holder is “holding hands with the ACLU” to protect illegal aliens from prosecution, says illegals are committing “heinous crimes” across America every day, and calls claims that the federal government should be solely responsible for controlling illegal immigration “balderdash.”

Dever is sheriff of Cochise County, which shares an 83-mile border with Mexico, and he says his Border Patrol sector is responsible for half of all illegal aliens caught trying to enter the country and halt the narcotics entering the United States.

White House Battles High Gas Prices; Hopes to Reinforce Consumer Confidence

As gas prices inch towards $4 a gallon nationally, the White House is doing its best to counter Americans' fears those prices will continue upwards over the summer. White House Chief Economist Austan Goolsbee told Fox News that it cost him $75 to fill up his car recently but added the higher gas prices haven't dampened consumer confidence.

Citizens Oppose Preferential Tuition Rates for Illegal Aliens

tuition_battle58,000 signatures needed to get issue on 2012 ballot
Marylanders, frustrated with a bill granting in-state college tuition rates to some illegal immigrants, have launched a petition drive to send the measure to voters.
Parrott and his team set up www.mdpetitions.com, where petition supporters can print out copies and read instructions on how to collect signatures.
The goal is to get enough signatures from registered voters to put the tuition measure on the 2012 general election ballot for voters to decide. They need 18,500 signatures by the end of May and about 58,000 signatures by the end of June – the latter representing 3 percent of Maryland’s voters.
“The people of Maryland are upset this bill passed. They’re upset because they thought illegal means illegal,” said Del. Neil Parrott, R-Washington County, who is running the petition effort.http://www.usbc.org/destroying-america/immigration-news/citizens-oppose-preferential-tuition-rates-for-illegal-aliens/

Pelosi Caught Flip-Flopping Big Time on Bin Laden

Nancy Pelosi, press conference, September 7, 2006:

Even if Osama bin Laden is caught tomorrow, it is five years too late. He has done more damage the longer he has been out there. But, in fact, the damage that he has done ... is done. And even to capture him now I don't think makes us any safer.

Nancy Pelosi, earlier today (May 3, 2011)
The death of Osama bin Laden marks the most significant development in our fight against al-Qaida. ... I salute President Obama, his national security team, Director Panetta, our men and women in the intelligence community and military, and other nations who supported this effort for their leadership in achieving this major accomplishment. ... The death of Osama bin Laden is historic....

John Ransom Email, Hate Mail and Comments from Readers

Wow. What a week.

Our debt chicken came home to roost, twice; our economy is stalling; Superman’s going international and electric cars will, sooner or later, be deemed a threat to a type of ground squirrel that you and I have never heard of.

Oh, and make sure you read Mike Shedlock's excellent piece about California Coercion, Threats and Bribery by Unions.

Here’s this week’s Email, Hate Mail and Comments from Readers:

Blair wrote: This could be a publicity stunt by DC [Comics] to sell more comic books. Remember when they killed him off back in the mid- late '80s?- response to my column Supermen Step on Obama Cape

Blair-

The funny thing is that when I first read about the new Superman storyline, I immediately thought of the new Coke/old Coke controversy. By introducing a new formulation of Coke, the Coca Cola company made fans remember all the things they loved about the real thing (pun intended).

But the analogy fell apart when I realized the big difference: Coke is just a product; Superman is a character. He’s a character who is supposed to represent “Truth, Justice and the American Way.”

That’s heady American stuff.

SNL already discussed the implication of a non-American Superman in great detail in Season 4, episode 10 in a segment called “What if?” starring Michael Palin- no relation to Sarah I suppose.

Well, here's tonight's dramatization of: What if Superman had grown up in Germany instead of America?”

“I am.. Uberman! I have superhuman powers, and I fight for untruth, injustice, and the Nazi way.”

Sounds like he works for ACORN.

Chuck wrote: In your article today, “It Tax a Village”, you illustrate why we need the FairTax Act of 2011 (HR 25/S 13). -in response to my column It Tax a Village

There are lots of reasons why we need a fair tax. The biggest reason is that it’s, um, fair. But also, one of the main sources of corruption in our government is the subtle tilting of the tax code in order to bribe certain groups.

Liberals would contend that the tax code is set up to favor the rich.

I disagree. http://finance.townhall.com/columnists/johnransom/2011/05/01/email,_hate_mail_and_comments_from_readers
