The Man Who Police Gave Photos of Trump's Would-Be Assassin to Was Not Secret Service

Who is the Hat Man? The sleep paralysis nightmare shared around the world | The Week

United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is expected to be grilled during her testimony before the House Oversight Committee. I have no idea what to expect, and it wouldn’t shock me if Cheatle catches ‘COVID’ or flat-out doesn’t show up. There is nothing that can be done to make up what happened on July 13, when former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated by Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who was perched on an unprotected rooftop less than 200 yards from the rally stage. Trump turning his head saved him from a fatal headshot. The bullet missed by millimeters, instead grazing his right ear.

When the shooter was neutralized, police took photos of the body as evidence, later being given to a man in a grey suit. That man was not a Secret Service agent, highlighting the shambolic security apparatus at this event:

Maria Bartiromo says a man in a grey suit climbed the ladder while police were taking pics of Thomas Crooks’ body & gave them a number to send the pics to

Police thought the man was Secret Service, but he wasn’t

That’s not the worst of it.

In the aftermath, we’ve heard nothing from the Secret Service, who, like Biden, have scurried into the bunker-like scared wombats. The shooter was seen with a rangefinder before opening fire and reportedly flew a drone over the rally area. The Secret Service did not deploy a drone. The reason offered for not having a sniper team on that roof was due to a physical danger: the sloped roof. It’s a talking point that should have led to the entire USSS communications team firing for peddling deliberate misinformation—no one believed that lie. Cheatle should have been fired or resigned days ago, but she’s gal pals with Jill Biden.

Secret Service snipers had their sights on Crooks for two minutes before he opened fire, the agency itself knew there was a threat to Trump 10 minutes before he took the stage but allowed him to proceed; Trump says they never told him of the threat. The agency denied additional resources to protect the former president. The security lapses embody the incompetence and disarray of the Biden administration in anything they do. It almost got Trump killed. It did get Corey Comperatore, a firefighter, killed, being struck by gunfire as he tried to shield his family. Two others were injured as well.

The allocation of local law enforcement was also suspect, with local law enforcement now leaking that the agency never instructed them to safeguard buildings. The local cops who did encounter Crooks only did so after leaving their designated posts, which was traffic duty. Susan Crabtree of RealClearPolitics has more on the established inexcusable and inept security net that arguably could have plunged this nation into civil war.

After the assassination attempt, the Secret Service said it hadn’t denied repeated requests by Trump’s security detail for more help. It lied. Now the @nytimes and @washingtonpost have confirmed our reporting and vindicated @dbongino. What else is being covered up? pic.twitter.com/ZRy9hkA2g0

🚨🚨CHILLING. Here's the most frightening section of Sen. Ron Johnson's initial report from his investigation -- an investigation that produced many unfathomable security lapses and nonsensical security procedures.

— Susan Crabtree (@susancrabtree) July 21, 2024

She posted a series of damning findings over the weekend:

The Secret Service top brass, Cheatle included, hand out bonuses to mid-level managers who cut manpower, resources requests from those Secret Service special agents and officers on the ground in charge of protecting the presidents, vice president, former presidents, etc.

There's a team of special agents or Uniform Division officers (counter snipers are UD, not agents) doing all the advance work on the ground to figure out how many resources are needed. That team includes the lead advance agent, the site agent, the counter sniper team conducting the initial survey of the rally or event venue.

Then those agents/officers (counter snipers are officers, not agents) sends it to the LEAD ADVANCE AGENT -- who then send all their detailed manpower requests to the Assistant Director Protective Operations, or ADPO, back in Washington, a GS-14 or around that level of official, who reviews the plan, looks at all the diagrams, and they decide what kind of resources the event is going to get.

There are almost always cuts, an notion of "do more with less," a source within the Secret Service community tells me.

My sources tell me these GS-14s or around that level of manager, get bonuses based on how much money they can save for the agency based on the cuts.

"They put it in their final reports to their managers, 'Hey, look how much money we saved this year,'" the source continued.. "It's really goofy, because they look a all the diagrams, and in their wisdom back in D.C. -- they're not the ones at the site -- how much, how many resources you're gonna get."

And then this:

Sen. Ron Johnson and his staff have written an initial report from his bipartisan investigation informed by whistleblowers who have talked to his office. I’ve obtained the 13-page executive summary of it.

Some of this Sen. Johnson discussed with Fox News Morning with Maria this morning -- but here are all the details and the report itself.

Key findings:

1.) Secret Service did not attend a security briefing provided to local special weapons and tactics (SWAT) and sniper teams the morning of July 13, 2024. Why not?

--There was a 9 a.m. briefing on July 13, 2024, Butler County Emergency Services (Butler ESU) provided a security briefing for the local SWAT teams and snipers assigned to the rally. In addition to Butler County, local SWAT teams and snipers from Washington County and Beaver County were also tasked with security responsibilities.

2. Local law enforcement said communications were siloed and they were not in frequent radio contact directly with Secret Service.

3. Local law enforcement notified command about Crooks prior to the shooting and received confirmation that Secret Service was aware of the notification.

4. Following the shooting Secret Service was seen on the roof of the AGR building with local law enforcement; photos of the shooter were sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) for facial recognition.

5.) Secret Service was initially not going to send snipers to the rally, according to local law enforcement.

If Cheatle arrives, she better be prepared to get pummeled because she deserves it.

Trump Reacts To Biden Ending Presidential Bid

Republican National Convention: Day Four
CLEVELAND, OH - JULY 21: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gives two thumbs up to the crowd during the evening session on the fourth day of the Republican National Convention on July 21, 2016 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Former President Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social stating President Joe Biden was not fit to run for president.

Trump has posted a statement following Biden’s decision to step down, saying “he only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement.”

“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!” he said. “All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t – And now, look what he’s done to our Country, with millions of people coming across our Border, totally unchecked and unvetted, many from prisons, mental institutions, and record numbers of terrorists. We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump also weighed in on Biden’s historic decision to drop out of the 2024 race in a phone call with CNN, calling him the “single worst president by far.”

“He is the worst president in the history of our country. He goes down as the single worst president by far in the history of our country,” Trump said.

Biden dropped out of the race on Sunday and has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democrat Party nominee.

Secret Service Chief Noted a 'Zero Fail Mission.' After Trump Rally, She's Facing Calls to Resign

Exclusive | Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle landed job after push by Jill Biden's office

When Kimberly Cheatle led the Secret Service's operations to safeguard the American president and other dignitaries, she said she would talk to agents in training about the “awesome responsibility” of their job.

“This agency and the Secret Service has a zero fail mission,” Cheatle, who is now director of the agency, said in 2021 during a Secret Service podcast called “Standing Post." “They have to come in every day prepared and ready with their game face on.”

Now, the Secret Service and its director are under intense scrutiny over that “zero fail” mission following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a July 13 rally in Pennsylvania that wounded his ear. Lawmakers and others across the political spectrum are questioning how a gunman could get so close to the Republican presidential nominee when he was supposed to be carefully guarded.

Cheatle, who will testify before lawmakers Monday after congressional committees and the Biden administration launched a series of investigations, told ABC News that the shooting was “unacceptable.” When asked who bears the most responsibility, she said ultimately it is the Secret Service that protects the former president.

“The buck stops with me," Cheatle said. “I am the director of the Secret Service.” She said she has no plans to resign, and so far she has the administration’s backing.

Democratic President Joe Biden appointed Cheatle in August 2022 to take over an agency with a history of scandals, and she worked to bolster diverse hiring, especially of women in the male-dominated service. The second woman to lead the Secret Service, Cheatle worked her way up for 27 years before leaving in 2021 for a job as a security executive at PepsiCo. Biden brought her back.

Now, she faces her most serious challenge: figuring out what went wrong with the agency's core responsibility to protect presidents and whether she can maintain the support — or the job itself — to make changes.

Details are still unfolding about signs of trouble the day of the assassination attempt, including the steps taken by the Secret Service and local authorities to secure a building that the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, climbed within an estimated 147 yards (135 meters) of where Trump was speaking. A ex-fire chief at the rally, Corey Comperatore, was killed and two others were wounded.

The Biden administration has directed an independent review of security at the rally. The Homeland Security Department's inspector general has opened three investigations and congressional committees have launched others as calls mount for Cheatle to resign. Two Republican senators demanding answers followed her as she walked through the Republican National Convention this past week.

“The nation deserves answers and accountability,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., posted on the social media platform X. "New leadership at the Secret Service would be an important step in that direction.”

In the House, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on X that Biden should fire Cheatle immediately, noting Comperatore's death and saying that “we ... were millimeters away from losing President Trump. It is inexcusable.” Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., said in a statement Saturday that ”the evidence coming to light has shown unacceptable operational failures" and he would have no confidence in Cheatle's leadership if she were to stay in the job.

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee subpoenaed Cheatle to appear Monday, and she is expected to be there.

After the shooting, Cheatle and the female Secret Service agents who protected Trump have faced scathing criticism and questions about whether Cheatle lowered hiring standards. Supporters are adamant that has not happened.

“It is disrespectful to the women of the Secret Service of the Department of Homeland Security and to women law enforcement officers around the nation to imply that their gender disqualifies them from service to the nation and their communities,” said Kristie Canegallo, Homeland Security's acting deputy secretary.

Like many law enforcement agencies, the Secret Service has been wrestling with how to attract and retain agents and officers.

Women account for about 24% of the agency’s staff, according to the agency’s website. In a May 2023 interview with CBS News, Cheatle said she was conscious of the “need to attract diverse candidates and ensure that we are developing and giving opportunities to everybody in our workforce, and particularly women.”

Two years ago, Cheatle took over the agency of 7,800 special agents, uniformed officers and other staffers whose main purpose is protecting presidents, vice presidents, their families, former presidents and others. In announcing her appointment, Biden said Cheatle had served on his vice presidential detail and called her a “distinguished law enforcement professional with exceptional leadership skills” who had his "complete trust.”

Cheatle took the reins from James M. Murray as multiple congressional committees and an internal watchdog investigated missing text messages from when Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The Secret Service says they were purged during a technology transition.

Going back further, there have been other problems at the Secret Service, including a prostitution scandal before President Barack Obama's trip to Colombia in 2012 and a man who jumped over the White House fence in 2014 and made it into the building.

The Homeland Security Department did not make Cheatle available for an interview, but Canegallo defended her work. Canegallo said Cheatle advocated for a law passed this year that authorized overtime pay for Secret Service agents and successfully oversaw nine high-profile events such as political conventions. The agency under her watch protected Biden during his trip to Ukraine without problems, Canegallo said.

During the podcast, Cheatle talked about how much planning goes into events that the Secret Service oversees — from bad weather and COVID-19 to threats of violence.

“It’s our job to kind of sit back and ‘What if?’ every potential threat and scenario,” she said.

Cheatle applied for the Secret Service while she was still in college. She was told to wait until she had graduated and said in the podcast that it ultimately took a little over two years to get hired: “I was pretty persistent.”

After training, she was assigned to the Detroit office where she spent a little over four years. Cheatle transferred to Washington where she served on the Treasury secretary's detail and protected Vice President Dick Cheney, including on 9/11.

Other positions during her time with the agency include special agent in charge of the Atlanta field office and special agent in charge of the agency’s training facility in Maryland. She became the first woman to be named assistant director of protective operations, the division that provides protection to the president and other dignitaries where she oversaw a $133.5 million budget.

Keith Olbermann Diagnosed With Terminal Trump Derangement Syndrome

Keith Olbermann needs help. Seriously, the guy needs some kind of intervention or something. His acrimony towards any political figure to the right of Vyacheslav Molotov is well documented, and his seething hatred of Donald Trump goes back at least to the moment that Trump descended the golden elevator to announce he was running for president - as a Republican.

Now his Trump Derangement Syndrome is in Stage IV. In his latest bout of symptoms, he is claiming that Trump's injury from the bullet fired in last week's assassination attempt was faked.

Congressman Ronny Jackson, who served as physician to the president during the Trump administration, said in a statement Saturday he evaluated the former president in Bedminster, New Jersey, last week.

Jackson said Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the right ear from a high-powered rifle used by the would-be assassin.

Jackson, it should be noted, served in the White House Medical Unit under three presidents. In 2013, Jackson was named "Physician to the President," and he held that title for the remaining part of Barack Obama's term, retaining the title into the Trump administration. Also, in case you have not inferred this already, Ronny Jackson went to medical school and is a physician.

Keith Olbermann is not a physician.

Jackson's report on the former president's wound stated:

"The bullet track produced a 2 cm-wide wound that extended down to the cartilaginous surface of the ear," the physician said. "There was initially significant bleeding, followed by marked swelling of the entire upper ear. The swelling has since resolved, and the wound is beginning to granulate and heal properly.

"Based on the highly vascular nature of the ear, there is still intermittent bleeding requiring a dressing to be in place. Given the broad and blunt nature of the wound itself, no sutures were required."

Olbermann responded critically on X.

Keith. Seriously. Get help.

It's amazing, the denial of reality that is going on in the mind - and I use the term mind in the broadest possible sense - of this man. This was an event that took place in front of thousands of people. A man died. Two others were critically wounded. A photographer caught an amazing photo of the bullet whizzing past Donald Trump's head.

Photographer Explains Incredible Moment He Snapped Pic of Bullet Nearing Trump's Head

Olbermann's denial of this not only reeks of hatred, it is an act insulting to the family of Corey Comperatore, who was killed while protecting his wife and daughters. It's insulting to David Dutch and James Copenhaver, who were seriously wounded. Does Olbermann think their injuries were faked as well?

Enough is enough. iHeart Radio should ditch his podcast. He is a disgrace to the trade of journalism; he should be, frankly, blacklisted. He has been unhinged for some time, but these insulting, disgusting remarks are beyond the pale. Yes, he enjoys the First Amendment rights of free speech - but that does not guarantee him a platform, nor does it guarantee him immunity from the consequences of the bile he spews.

Shut up, Keith. You're a disgrace and an embarrassment.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Charges in to Rescue Biden From the Windmills of Her Own Mind

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), queen of the perpetual cause minus causation, has come out verbally throwing hands at her fellow Democrats who are calling for President Joe Biden to recuse himself from the 2024 presidential election. Ocasio-Cortez has accused “elitists” in her party of not only wanting to remove Biden from the November ballot but also, should this transpire, not replace him with Vice President Kamala Harris.

“If you think that there is consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to leave that they will support Vice President Harris, you would be mistaken. They’re not going to be fully honest, but I’m going to be honest for them.

“I’m in these rooms. I see what they say in conversations. I’m here to tell you that a huge amount of the donor class and a huge amount of these elites and a huge amount of these folks in these rooms that I see that are pushing for President Biden to not be the nominee also are not interested in seeing [the] Vice President being the nominee.”

Setting aside contemplation of the linguistic gymnastics required to see what people say — perhaps Rep. Ocasio-Cortez acquired lip reading skills during her tenure as a bartender to assist in getting drunken drink orders correct when serving at noisy locations — it warrants mention that Ocasio-Cortez is an unyielding Biden supporter even after his celebrated crash and burn during his first debate with former President Donald Trump. She also possesses keen observational skills, said awesome perception chops leading to such revelations as Biden possibly being too advanced in years to identify with any of the main characters in Bluey. Her statement on this contains so many astonishing moments it warrants detailed, line-by-line analysis.

“I’m pretty sure a lot of people knew that the President is old.”

I have little doubt the only people unaware of this fact are presently dead. Rest assured, this will not prevent them from voting for whoever the Democrats nominate for President.

“President Biden is very old.”

I’m so glad she repeated this; she was unclear the first time.

“Donald Trump is also very old and a racist and a neo-Nazi”

Old, yes. Racist and neo-Nazi, no. Just stop with the hateful, hysterical hyperbole. Just. Stop.

“A lot of people don’t love that we have the same exact match-up all over again ...”

Okay, we’ll give you that. However, the primaries are over. I almost feel like I should say that again for the benefit of people still sulking over the matter.

“... which is to say that the debate didn’t change much at all. It didn’t really change a lot in terms of people’s perceptions, in terms of where the electorate is at and going into the debate.”

Um... wow. The debate didn’t change people’s perceptions? Did Ocasio-Cortez watch the debate? Even the most ardent Biden booster was left aghast at his feeble performance. Has she not seen the polls? Trump’s lead over Biden grows bigger by the day. Ocasio-Cortez’s assessment not only denies reality; it boldly leaps into full-blown hallucination.

Ah, but there’s more. Ocasio-Cortez reserves her greatest kvetch for her fellow Democrats who have sounded the alarm post-debate.

“I’m looking at a watch and I’m looking at a clock and I’m looking at a calendar.”

And we’re looking at you trying to read any of them.

“And I think ...”

“... that if personally, people want to have this conversation six months ago, eight months ago, a year ago. It’s a very different landscape of logistics.

“If you’re an everyday person that has this opinion, I’m not angry, but this whole class of people who are coming with this other opinion now have supported the president the entire time, and many of those people are the same people who closed ranks around anybody who wanted to raise this conversation a year ago.”

She has a legitimate point. Biden’s cognitive decline has been on ample display for months. The Democrats had plenty of time to work out a way for him to retire gracefully and run someone — anyone — against Trump. Instead, they kicked the can down the road until it became wedged under a debate-sized boulder blocking the path.

Ocasio-Cortez finishes with a flourish.

“There have been lots of Democrats who have been giving little anonymous quotes to the press,” she said. “I’m sorry, I’m going to say because it’s after the midnight, that’s b------t.

“If you have an opinion, say it in public. But the idea that you are an elected official and you are supposed to be responsible for a community, and you’re just going to text some journalists on the low and say, ‘This is what I think — don’t put my name next to it.'

“What are you here to do? If that’s your opinion, and if that’s what you think is best for the country, put your name on it.”

Actually, AOC, lots of Dems are "putting their names to it"

Another Domino Falls: Rep. Adam Schiff Calls for Joe Biden to Leave the Presidential Race

More and More Democrats Are Calling for Biden to Drop Out

And to those Democrats who don’t want to put a ring on it ... er, their name on it?

“Leave. Just leave. Like, that is so garbage; that is such a fundamental lack of leadership. Go cash in on Wall Street. If that’s what you feel like, why keep that seat warm? This job is hard. It takes a lot of effort. You’re resigning yourself to losing, why don’t you just turn in your keys early and give it to someone who gives a damn?”

One could safely argue that “ridin’ with Biden” is equally addicted to losing, but who are we to argue with the good Congresswoman?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in her element jousting at the windmills of fantasy she believes to be monsters holding captive the downtrodden masses she has chosen to liberate. The problem is she keeps attacking the wrong windmills. It is the socialist policies she espouses crushing the middle class into serfdom that deserve the lance. The party elite (*coughclintonscough*) view her as an amusing, illogical featherweight that is occasionally useful for sound bites but insignificant when it comes to moving an agenda. To this end, she is currently unwittingly doing the Clintons' bidding by staying on the Biden train as it charges off the rails, thus cementing their place within the party as its leaders while the Obama brigade remains addicted to self-destruction.

The Idea of Changing Your Mind Confuses Democrats

Ever change your mind on anything or anyone? I bet you have. Do you know why I’d bet that way? Because you’re a human being, which makes you capable of all sorts of amazing things, especially the ability to learn new things and adapt to that knowledge. OK, maybe not ALL human beings have that skill – I’d tell Democrats to change their minds, but they shouldn’t work without tools – but those with an IQ larger than their hat size certainly can. This is why so many in the media seem to be confused by the idea that some people have changed their minds about Donald Trump.

Just after high school, my then-best friend met another friend in college who started hanging around our group. God, I hated that guy. It wasn’t jealousy; he was a jerk, and I had no interest in being around him. But he kept coming around the jerk, and eventually, I realized something: not that he wasn’t a jerk (we were all kinds of jerks), but that he was my kind of a jerk.

We became great friends once we got past that initial couple of months (and it was quite a while) of disliking each other. He was at my wedding, and I spoke to him more frequently than the other guy. Life is weird that way, isn’t it?

I remember that every time I see some “news” outlet reporting about what someone who endorses him now called Donald Trump in the past. People grow up, people change, and people see results they did not expect or even think possible and adapt to that reality. Again, by people, I mean people who aren’t committed, ideological, progressive leftist Democrats. While they are technically people, they are like stalkers who are convinced Taylor Swift is sending them secret messages to notice, let alone acknowledge, the failures of their beliefs or actions.

Republican Vice-Presidential nominee JD Vance wasn’t always a fan of Donald Trump’s. Vance, in the 2016 race when he was just a best-selling author and venture capitalist, said some really harsh things about Trump. So had I. So did just about everyone I know in politics, both famous and not. Why wouldn’t we have?

All anyone knew about Trump was what he said on the campaign trail, his TV show, and what we’d read in the newspapers for decades. His core philosophy didn’t seem very core, as he was on whatever side of whatever was happening at any given moment. He didn’t need to be consistent as he didn’t operate in the world of politics, just around the edges.

You’d see his pictures with Ronald Reagan and the Clintons. They took their picture with him for the same reason he took his picture with them: they were famous. Nothing was more profound than what rich and famous people do.

Then, Trump was elected President. In that job, he exceeded almost everyone’s expectations (I know Ann Coulter’s weren’t, but just about everyone else). That’s not to say Trump Derangement Syndrome didn’t have its casualties – some people never came around, no matter how many of their sworn life priorities Trump actually implemented. These Humpty Dumpties will spend forever shattering themselves into ever smaller pieces, unable to admit what is right in front of them.

Everyone else has opened their eyes.

That won’t, however, stop the left from trying to drive a wedge between people on the right over Trump. “Tucker Carlson Hails Trump as ‘Bravest Man’ in RNC Speech After Telling Staffer, ‘I Hate Him Passionately,’” screams one headline. Another reads, “Elon Musk Called Trump a ‘Stone-Cold Loser,’ According to NYT Report on Billionaire’s Rocky Relationship With Ex-President.” Now, both endorse him. What does that mean? (BTW, I know Tucker, and that’s just how he talks/texts. It’s how most people do; no one interesting is nuanced in texts. As for Musk, I don’t know him, though I would love to – hit me up, E – but I have read the Walter Isaacson book on him a couple of times and he changes his mind when new facts present themselves. It’s how he’s gotten to space and how he’ll get to Mars.)

Well, the negative quotes are from years ago, which means Tucker and Elon have had new information to digest, digested it and have come to different conclusions. Or, even though they still hold their prior beliefs, they’ve seen Joe Biden and the Democrats in action and recognize how much better Trump is by comparison. Either way, they’ve changed their opinion.

It’s a sign of intelligence to take in new facts and circumstances and adapt your thinking, it’s why no one on MSNBC has ever done it. OK, they have changed in that they’ve gone from “Trump is Hitler” to “Trump is Mecha-Hitler” to “Trump is Super-Mecha-Hitler,” but self-affirmation is not what I’m talking about.

Human beings, intelligent ones, admit when they’re wrong and learn from it. How stupid would you be if you held fast to everything you thought when you were 20? I’d be a dope-smoking moron, likely with a rotten liver, and would not have one of my best friends. If I stood fast to what I thought starting in mid-June 2015, I’d be my underpants cheering on Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, and the rest of their Reich Cabinet of National Salvation in front of an LED screen pretending to be at the Republican convention on MSNBC. But I’m not. And you are not. Fewer and fewer people are, which only reinforces what I’ve been saying here.

This is why Democrats are scrambling to replace Biden. They have no other game, so they’re going to try to rerun the same one with someone else at the top of it. Maybe the media should focus a little bit more on the reality of that, not just the surface facts, rather than on how people thought differently about someone years ago than they do now.
