A Republican member of the Michigan Board of State Canvassers is considering calling for an audit of the state’s election results before he votes to certify them, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
Norman Shinkle, one of two Republicans on the four-member board, said he is leaning toward asking for the audit before the board is scheduled to vote on Monday.
''I do think with all of the potential problems, if any of them are true, an audit is appropriate,'' Shinkle told the Post in a telephone interview. ''I take one step at a time, and if we can get more information, why not?''
Shinkle said that among his concerns are the claims that machines and software supplied by Dominion Voting Systems Corp., used in 30 states including nearly all of the ones where results have been in dispute, switched votes from President Donald Trump to Democratic rival Joe Biden.
''If Dominion was fudging votes, that’s a serious problem,'' he said. ''If it’s true. I don’t know. I have to be convinced of it. That’s why the audit makes sense.
''Right now the idea to check into some of these accusations seems to make sense to me. We have to have people trust our system going forward.''
The Post appeared to try to impugn Shinkle’s integrity by saying he was under intense pressure because his wife, Mary, filed an affidavit in support of a federal lawsuit by the Trump campaign — a reference to which he seemed to take exception.
''That’s almost an accusation against marriage,'' he said. ''My wife can do whatever she wants to do.''
