| U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) questions Special Counsel Jack Smith as he
testifies during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee in the
Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill on January 22, 2026 in
Washington, DC. 32-year-old Republican Representative Brandon Gill announced on Friday that he will “be voting no on all Senate bills — other than DHS funding — until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act.” The bill, which would mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration, passed by a narrow margin in the House of Representatives last month, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said that he will be bringing the bill to the Senate floor next week. President Donald Trump has championed the passage of the SAVE America Act, escalating his rhetoric this past Sunday with an ultimatum. In a series of statements, the president signaled a total legislative standoff, making it clear that the bill’s proof-of-citizenship requirements are a non-negotiable priority for the remainder of the session.
Aligning themselves with the president’s stance, a growing number of House Republicans — led by representatives such as Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas) —
took to social media to broadcast their unwavering resolve. These digital declarations serve to solidify a unified party front, signaling to both their base and colleagues that they are prepared to hold the line on the administration’s legislative priorities.
On Wednesday, Representatives Randy Fine (R-Fla.), Keith Self (R-Texas) and Mark Harris (R-N.C.) published an opinion piece on Fox News over the bill.
Additionally, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for Senate, posted to X on March 5th saying he would consider dropping out of the race “if Senate Leadership agrees to lift the filibuster and passes the SAVE America Act.” Thune has faced increasing pressure from the GOP to pass the act. Although Republicans hold a thin majority in the Senate, some Democrat support would be needed to achieve the 60-vote minimum to overcome the filibuster. The senator previously said “the votes aren’t there for a talking filibuster.” |
