A Venezuelan man is being charged after allegedly killing an 82-year-old woman by backing over her with an SUV outside of a grocery store in Panama City Beach, Florida. According to Fox News, Carlos Suarez-Contreras, 26 years old,
struck Deborah Murphy with a Toyota 4Runner while she was walking in the crosswalk in a Publix parking lot. Suarez-Contreras was reportedly in the United States illegally at the time of the incident on May 17th, the Florida Highway Patrol said. After she fell to the ground, the vehicle continued backing up, the report read. Murphy was then taken to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries, according to Fox News.
Police records showed that Luis Sanabria, 29 years old, who had an expired visa, was in the passenger seat of the vehicle when the SUV struck Murphy. Sanabria allegedly confirmed that Suarez-Contreras “was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash,” he told law enforcement at the scene in May. The two Venezuelan nationals were issued U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers and booked into the Bay County Sheriff’s Office Jail following the incident, according to court records. Meanwhile, Suarez-Contreras pleaded not guilty to the charge of driving with a canceled Georgia license and causing a death.
Suarez-Contreras is scheduled to be arraigned on August 17th at the Bay County Courthouse in Panama City Florida, Fox News reported. |
