New York’s new mayor has floated a radical experiment: city-run grocery stores selling a core basket of produce, meat and pantry staples at roughly 30 percent below retail. The mayor’s office celebrated the plan as a win for struggling families, but the blunt truth is that handing the market over to city hall is a political stunt dressed up as compassion.

This pilot isn’t tiny theater — Mamdani has proposed one municipal outlet in each borough and identified the first site already, pitching the rollout as a multi-year program. Government-run stores in major cities have a long history of promising bargains and delivering shortages, higher costs elsewhere, and political headaches that fall back on taxpayers.

Republicans and free-market critics smell socialism, and they’re right to be alarmed: when the mayor’s office starts picking winners and setting prices, private grocers, suppliers, and workers will be forced into an artificial economic squeeze.
