Trump predicts deal with Cuba: ‘I don't think we'll need the military’
President Donald Trump showed optimism in the United States’ chances of reaching a deal with Cuba instead of using military action after his comments at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) prompted the Cuban delegation to walk out.
“I would say that Cuba and the U.S. will make a deal,” Trump told reporters on Saturday. “I don’t think we’ll need the military. Cuba is failing very badly. We want to help Cuba. We want to open Cuba up to our people.”
He noted that opening Cuba up to American citizens would benefit the “great Cuban Americans that want to go back.”
Americans can travel to Cuba under certain circumstances, with licenses available for 12 categories of travel. The U.S. Embassy in Cuba maintains that tourism to Cuba is prohibited under long-standing U.S. economic sanctions.

Trump’s remark on Saturday echoed his earlier criticism of Cuba at the United Nations (UN) meeting in New York on Tuesday.
“My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under great pressure – the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under,” Trump stated. “It’s an absolutely failed state. It’s failing like never before, and it will fall.”
He said at the time that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose parents were Cuban immigrants, was engaged in talks with Cuba.
Trump also denounced Cuba’s promotion of Marxism after ramping up anti-communism statements in recent months.
“The Cuban regime has also spent decades coordinating with the left-wing radicals and communist networks here in the United States. As our State Department has detailed, they’ve cultivated ties to subversive and radical groups such as the Communist Party USA, Antifa and the Dumocrat Socialists of America. Communism will never be coming to America, but freedom will be coming to Cuba.”
The Department of State published a report in July concerning Cuba’s influence over left-wing and communist extremism in the U.S.
“For more than six decades, the Cuban regime has been the leading sponsor of radical leftism and Third Worldism in the United States,” Secretary Rubio said at the time.
