Republican California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton campaigned across Southern California on Wednesday as a new poll showed his Democrat opponent, Xavier Becerra, leading by 24 percentage points, the New York Post reported.
Hilton planned to visit Altadena on Wednesday with HPP Cares, a nonprofit helping families affected by the 2025 Eaton Fire. He also scheduled a stop in Van Nuys, where he planned to appeal to Democrat and independent voters by criticizing California's rising cost of living under Democrat leadership.
The former Fox News host also launched a six-figure advertising campaign targeting traditionally Democrat voters with the slogan "Just try it, California."
Becerra had no public events scheduled Wednesday after campaigning Tuesday in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he met with Asian American and Black community leaders and participated in union-backed campaign activities.
A Public Policy Institute of California survey released Wednesday showed Becerra leading Hilton 61% to 37% among 1,068 likely voters surveyed Oct. 16-22. Becerra led 60% to 38% in September.
Hilton has focused his campaign on homelessness, housing affordability, infrastructure spending, and wildfire preparedness, arguing that Becerra would continue Democrat policies he has criticized.
At a Tuesday campaign appearance in Newport Beach, Hilton criticized California's Broadband for All program, which received $3.25 billion in initial funding in 2021 for a statewide broadband network. His campaign claimed only one project had been completed.
Becerra, a former California attorney general, congressman, and U.S. health secretary under President Joe Biden, has highlighted Hilton's endorsement by President Donald Trump while criticizing the administration's policies.
Democrats have held California's governorship since 2011 and maintain an advantage in voter registration. Republicans have not won a California gubernatorial election since Arnold Schwarzenegger's reelection in 2006.
