President Donald Trump insisted Tuesday night that Republicans would have won the midterm elections in a landslide if he had been on the ballot, as Democrats were projected to recapture the House and scored major Senate victories in their push to take control of Congress. "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" Trump declared in a Truth Social post. "Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP," he added. Trump's assessment came as Republicans suffered significant election-night setbacks, with Newsmax projecting Democrats would reclaim the House, threatening the GOP's ability to advance the president's agenda during his final two years in office. Democrats also made gains in the Senate, where Republicans entered Election Day with a 53-47 majority. Newsmax projected Democrat James Talarico the winner of the closely watched Texas Senate contest against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, a major pickup for Democrats in a state where Republicans have dominated statewide elections for more than three decades. Talarico's projected victory would mark the first time a Democrat has won a statewide election in Texas since 1994 and the first Democrat Senate victory in the state since 1988. Democrats also flipped a Republican-held Senate seat in North Carolina, where former Gov. Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, according to the Associated Press. Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff won reelection in Georgia, defeating Republican Rep. Mike Collins and denying Republicans a pickup they had hoped would help preserve their majority. In New Hampshire, Democrat Rep. Chris Pappas defeated Republican John Sununu for an open Senate seat, keeping it in Democratic hands. The election unfolded against a difficult political backdrop for Trump, who has been battling declining approval ratings, persistent concerns about rising consumer prices and controversy over the U.S. war with Iran. Early CBS News exit polling put Trump's job approval rating at 38%, with roughly six in 10 voters saying the president was a factor in their House vote. The Iran conflict has added to the political pressure on the administration, with higher energy costs contributing to Americans' concerns about affordability and critics questioning the military campaign. Trump has defended the operation as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and protect American national security interests. The president spent the closing weeks of the campaign traveling to battleground states and urging his supporters to vote for Republican candidates as though his own name were on the ballot. "I'm just asking everybody to pretend that I'm on the ballot," Trump said during a Monday appearance on Fox News' "Hannity." Trump argued that his presence on the ballot historically draws substantially more Republican voters to the polls. "If our people vote, we win in a landslide," he said. Trump also warned that a Democrat takeover of Congress could threaten major elements of his second-term agenda, including tax cuts and other economic policies. The president acknowledged Monday that the party controlling the White House has historically struggled in midterm elections, but insisted Republicans had mounted a strong effort to overcome that pattern. A Democrat-controlled House could block major Republican legislative initiatives and launch investigations into the Trump administration, while a Democrat Senate majority could complicate confirmation of presidential nominees and federal judges. Trump has made clear that he would use his presidential veto power to challenge legislation he opposes should Democrats take control of Congress. © 2026 Newsmax. All rights reserved.
